TeenFlight Application Request

Interested in getting involved?

The TeenFlight program has been building planes with students for over 10 years and has since been adopted by other organizations worldwide.  We want to inspire the next generation to broaden their horizons with an appreciation for aviation.

Whether you want to join us as a student or are interested in helping out with future builds we’re excited to Explore Aerospace with you.

Note that this program requires a two-year commitment of every Saturday from 9am-3pm from students. We do not take breaks for summer vacations or school breaks such as spring and winter breaks.

This is not intended as a summer camp or short-term extracurricular activity. Space in the build program is limited and commitment to attending the majority of build dates is a requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does this cost?

The TeenFlight program is free of charge!

How old do I need to be to participate?

TeenFlight students can start as early as 14 years old, but often students are a little older.

Do I really have to spend every Saturday doing this?

Short Answer: Yes

Building a plane is not a quick or easy thing, especially when you’re just learning the ropes. When you join TeenFlight, you’re joining part of a team. Your teammates are going to be counting on you, just like you’ll be counting on them, to do your part and get the job done. Each student will learn all about the different processes included in putting the plane together but this program relies on students working together. If you’re not able to commit to attending the majority of Saturdays, this may not be the program for you right now.

Of course, we understand that there are emergencies that come up and we can work with students for those absences.

I don't know anything about planes, can I still take part?

Yes!

We’ll teach you everything you need to know about putting planes together, using power tools, and so much more. In two years time, you’ll have confidence in both physical and practical skills to take with you, wherever life takes you.

What kind of license do I need to fly the plane?

The RV-12 only needs a Sport Pilot Certificate, which requires you to be 17 years old and hold a valid US driver’s license. There’s more training that goes into it, but that’s the starting point!

What do you do with the plane when it's done?

Traditionally we’ve auctioned off the planes once they are complete. The funds from these auctions have usually been enough to fund the next build for students and help to keep the program cost-free. We have one on hand right now that is maintained and kept up to date to bring with us to shows and events.

Can I build my own plane without TeenFlight?

The planes that TeenFlight students build art kit planes produced by Van’s Aircraft, so anyone can buy the kits and put them together. You can learn more about the RV-12iS and how to order your own kit here.
